Case Four

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis. The patient had a colonoscopy performed with mucosal biopsy which revealed an eosinophilic infiltrate. He was started on prednisone with marked improvement of his symptoms.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It's rarest form also includes ascites as seen in this patient. Presentations typically include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and protein losing enteropathy. It is also characterized by a marked peripheral eosinophilia. The treatment is steroid therapy.
