Case Five

Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Miller-Fisher variant. This variant is characterized by initial cranial nerve involvement and a descending progression as opposed to the ascending paralysis typical of classic GB. The patient lost her reflexes during the 2nd day after presentation. The CSF findings of elevated protein were also consistent with the diagnosis. She recieved plasmapheresis therapy and did well. She was discharged after several days and, after weeks of rehabilitation, was able to return to practicing medicine.
