The Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is a full-service department which sees the full spectrum of patients, a volume of 54,000 patients and a wide range of pathology and acuity. The newly renovated Emergency Department (1994) has 15,000 square feet of space, with increased patient care areas, office space, a conference room and a library

 

Trauma facilities include a large bay equipped for multiple patients, and a full complement of the latest equipment. Patients arrive from throughout northwestern New Jersey via helicopter and ambulance.

 

There is a separate waiting area and examination area for pediatric patients. There is also a designated area for ambulatory patients, with an x-ray room within the department for fast turn-around. Psychiatric services are available within the department, 24 hours a day

 

From multiple terminals within the department, residents are able to access Medindex, and are able to access Medline. There is an extensive emergency medicine library available on-site.

 

The Emergency Department is the base station for the MICU State certified paramedics provide pre-hospital care, under physician control, via voice communication with the Emergency Department base station. The MICU Medical Director is a member of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
