Brief Information

Description
 
An extra heart sound resembling the sound of a galloping horse, due to fast heart rates.
 
Type and Detection
 
Heard over apex; while patient is at at supine or left lateral position.
 
Findings on Examination
 
 
Low pitch presystolic, intense, easily heard sound. Increases with inspiration, exercise, elevation of legs, and with increased venous return.
 
Heart Sound Components S3 and S4 fuse with fast heart rates.
