Morphology: Gram negative rods, produce urease, shows 'swarming effect' on nutrient and blood agar, does not ferment lactose,

Route of transmission: Food borne, fomites

Investigations: Gram stain, organism cultured on MacConkey's agar

Diseases:

Urinary tract infection

Pneumonia

Septicemia

Treatment:

Due to varied antibiotic resistance, gentamicin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim are used empirically until results of sensitivity tests are known.
